Internships Agronomy Research
Solynta is an innovative, young seed company based in Wageningen that develops and commercializes new, robust hybrid potato varieties grown from true potato seeds (TPS). In the agronomy & physiology research department, we investigate how plant development and yield can be optimized when growing potatoes from true seed instead of conventionally used seed tubers. This includes the production of high-quality seedlings from true potato seed, the effect of agronomic practices, and crop management. Moreover, we look into post-harvest tuber storability. In 2025 we have several internship possibilities on these topics.
The project work will mainly involve managing and performing a field trial, lab work (processing plant biomass during harvests), data collection, and analysis. The fieldwork will start in mid-May 2025 and end around September 2025. We are therefore looking for enthusiastic Plant Science students (or students from other related studies programs) to support our research through a thesis during the trial period. Our ideal candidate is one who is keen on conducting field trials on agronomy research and has experience in fieldwork and knowledge in data collection and analysis. Please indicate in your motivation letter which of the projects you are interested and your preferred start date.
Projects:
Project 1: Steering seedling development
In this trial, the aim is to determine treatments to steer seedling growth and development before field transplanting and assess the impact of the treatments on seedling vigour as well as establishment. Start between 1st of February and 1st of May.
Project 2: Cultivation systems
In this trial, the aim is to optimize the cultivation system for both seedlings and directly sown seeds, multiple treatments are tested under different conditions. Start between the 1st of April and 15th of May.
Project 3: Tuber storability
In this trial, the aim is to assess the impact of various treatments on the storability and quality of the harvested tubers. Start between the 1st of July and the 1st of September.
